As far as exercise supplements go, there are a bazillion to choose from. Everybody has different needs, and tastes, what may work great for one, might be horrible for another, you have to experiment, try until you find what works best for you.
That being said, I’ve landed on the Honey Stinger brand, utilizing a few of their different products to keep myself pedaling, or swimming, those longer distances. I think an important point with any exercise supplement is to use only what you need, which can be tricky, there’s probably a fine balance between being under-fed for performance, and consuming in excess, negating your exercise with extra calories and sodium, or giving yourself an upset stomach, prematurely ending your activity. Lately I’ve been trying to move towards the less is more thinking for anything but the 40+ mile rides. If you’re reading this, Honey Stinger, I’d be happy to promo your products further, get in touch with me!
There are a lot of other great brands out there, however, to me, these are the most palatable. I stay away from the caffeinated supplements (Honey Stinger has some caffeinated options as well) , of any brand, I get enough shakes as it is, and caffeine in any form besides my morning coffee or tea, makes me feel gross.
Over the last year, I’ve settled on the Honey Stinger Gold Energy Gel (which I’ll be review below in this post) for my gel variety, it’s not my favorite of their products, but it’s cheeper than the chews and waffles, and you can consume more readily while on the move, and it gets the job done:
The Honey Stinger Waffle (they all taste good, review post coming soon!):
And my personal favorite, The Honey Stinger Organice Energy Chews, Fruit Smoothie flavor (review post coming soon!):
I have come to really like the Honey Stinger line of exercise supplements. The Gold Energy Gel is my favorite, when it comes to gels, or goo varieties. Fast and easy to consume, actually tastes good, and this particular one doesn't upset my stomach. I am knocking the review points down a bit on account of three things, really, if the packaging issue were addressed, this would get a 10: 1. The last box of Gels that I have off of Amazon, has been problematic. When first opening the box, I discovered that at least one of the Gel packages had leaked, sticky honey coating everything. I rinsed the packets off one at a time until I found the one offender. Two weeks later, I guess another one, or more have leaked, I've yet to go through the container again for clean-up. 2. One of the brands of Gels I've used in the past had a little tag, or leash, that kept the tear away tab connected to the main packet after you opened it. Every brand should do this! It's annoying having both the main packet, and a little tab to keep track of until you get a chance to properly dispose of both. 3. There have been a couple times where I must not have consumed enough water while downing this gel, and I felt my throat a bit irritated when I started breathing more heavily with exercise afterwards.
